ARTIST TALK & DEMO
AT ASIAN ART MUSEUM
SAN FRANCISCO, CA
March 24 -25, 2017
Rupy had the honor to share the unique Sikh painting style from the Sikh Kingdoms during the 19th century as well as contemporary Gurmukhi calligraphy at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, CA. The Artist demo and talk were part of the programming in support of the Sikh Art Exhibition "Saints and Kings" running at the museum. It was a moment of pride to bring Sikh heritage to life through art practice at a major museum.

Art that makes a statement.
"Mirror Mirror" is my largest piece yet.
It's bright. It's cheerful. And it's for you.

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਆਰਸੀ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥
"This mind is a mirror; how rare are those who,
as Gurmukh, see themselves in it."
This piece is meant to make you stop, look, and reflect.
In my moments of doubt, hardship, and happiness, I have always trusted the practice of self-reflection. I have used bold colors and contrasts so that this piece stands out in any room or space. The script is bent and interweaved so you can take a moment to look and reflect. The piece is rooted in my admiration of the beautiful tradition of Arabic calligraphy. My desire was to introduce a similar beautify and balance to Gurmukhi through distortion of the letters and layout.
