The 1947 Partition of British India was an event that not only resulted in loss of life but also the loss of homeland and a sense of belonging. My grandparents were among the 15 million refugees created by this tragic event.
Partition has left a painful impact on the minds of many who were displaced and on the lives of many generations who have grown up on stories of loss and longing related to Partition.
This series of paintings is an investigation into the impact of Partition on my upbringing and story as a second generation witness of Partition. The series includes several calligraphy and miniature works all connected by the thread of separation, a sentiment commonly referenced in Punjabi stories of love and belonging.
